Now Let's Meet Bernard with this edition of
"Five For Friday"

featuring

A Harem Boy’s Saga –Book I – INITIATION; a memoir by Young

Hello Bernard and thank you for agreeing to sit down with us!  We are so excited to have you with us here at Rukia Publishing with your memoir series, "A Harem Boy's Saga".

Thank You! This is always exciting. It's is great to meet Team Rukia!

Let's Get Started!

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

I’ve been a writer since early 2011. I wrote because four years ago, after I closed my fashion boutique in Honolulu, I decided it was time to document my positive adolescent life experiences that I’ve kept under wraps for close to 40 years. That’s when A Harem Boy’s Saga; a memoir by Young (my pen-name) series was born.
An inner calling told me to document my unique education and now, is the correct moment to tell my story.

How did you come up with your stories?

I’m writing about my life’s many adventures and experiences. The dialogue within the books are my creative input since I can’t remember everything that was said 40 something years ago. But the experiences are true because I have many photographs taken during those early years of my life to remind me of what transpired.

How did you conduct your research for – A Harem Boy’s Saga – I - INITIATION?

I had a privileged and unique upbringing in Malaysia, where I was known as a "sissy boy." Following in my brothers' footsteps, I was sent to an exclusive boarding school in England. It is there that I was inducted into a clandestine organization, E.R.O.S. The Enlightened Royal Oracle Society. For four years, unbeknownst to my family, I was willingly and happily part of a Harem.

My story has been kept under wraps for close to 45 years. The correct moment has arrived for me to make known my unique education.

What are 3 of your favorite lines/quotes from your newest release?

A Harem Boy Saga - I – INITIATION; a memoir by Young
“It is better to be looked over than be overlook.” Mae West
“It's not what you wear - it's how you take it off.” Bernard Tristan Foong
“The magic of first love is our ignorance that it can ever end.” Benjamin Disraeli

What do you do when you don’t write?

Do dance fitness classes – Zumba, Barre-Work, U-jam, Ballet for adults and walk/hike.
Travel the world.
Social networking on the computer.

Buena lectura !!!

About The Book
TODD'S IN A STREET GANG, JAMIE WANTS TO BE. TO GET HIS FRIEND'S BACKING AND JOIN THE RIVERSIDE POSSE, HE TAKES HIM TO A SECRET LABORATORY. BUT DISASTER IS ABOUT TO STRIKE...

Who was the mysterious Hector Lightfoot? What was he up to when he disappeared, and who were the two ghosts once seen in his house? School friends Jamie and Todd are destined to find out when they go to London to spend a weekend with Jamie's Uncle Simon, who now lives in that very house. Soon after they arrive, Jamie has a frightening encounter with the two ghosts.

Hector, a veteran from the First Afghan War, joined a covert expedition to China, and afterwards worked on a secret Government project in an underground lab at theBritish Museum. He vanished suddenly, and was never heard from again.

Simon takes the boys to the lab, where they find a strange contraption – which, unknown to any of them, is a time-travel device. When the building is struck by lightning, the device is energized, and sends the boys back in time to the year 1862. There, surrounded by danger and exposed to disease, they are sucked into a life of crime in order to survive.

Only if they can find Hector will they have any chance of getting home again. But why has he gone into hiding? Who is the man after him and what does he want?

As the boys struggle to escape back to their own time, Jamie becomes convinced that the two ghosts he saw earlier are following them…

"TIME-TRAVEL THURSDAY WITH TIME TRAP"
~ISSUE FOUR OF SIX~

Shelton Street (a tad from the Time Trap Trail, close to Seven Dials) Then and Now

Shelton Street Then

Charles Dickens’s son, Charles Dickens Junior describes it thus:

“Here poverty is to be seen in its most painful features. The shops sell nothing but second or third hand articles.

The street swarms with children of all ages… Public houses abound and it is evident that whatever there may be a lack of, there is no lack of money for drink.”

From The Trail
William Shelton was a holy man and a philanthropist who stipulated in his will that the poor of St Giles should be clothed and educated by his estate. From Shelton’s death in 1661, until 1763, a free school was established in nearby Parker Street which taught 50 local ragamuffins (usually, a child in rags) in English, humanities, classics and good manners, he also left a legacy to provide “the habit of a gentleman” to 20 beggars each year. Given that even the wealthier rookery-dwellers would go around in rags; these 20 must have been the best-dressed vagrants in history!

Until 1877, Shelton Street was known as Castle Street and it marked the unofficial south-eastern fringe of the sprawling St Giles rookery. This area inspired many of Dickens’s depictions of Victorian London’s seedy underbelly. Today, the narrow street, stretching from Drury Lane to St Martin’s Lane still gives clues to its iniquitous past with a number of alleys and courtyards where footpads and highwaymen would have skulked menacingly in the shadows, waiting for the next wealthy merchant to plunder.

An Excerpt From Time Trap
Through the fog, Jamie glimpsed small children still out playing, despite the freezing weather. They would appear and then fade into the fog, hopping and skipping along. One group played a game where they rolled head-over-heels.
Jamie and Todd moved through a sea of paupers. Faces peered from everywhere; entire families gathered in the street. Outside one house, a goat stood chained to railings and chickens clucked in small cages. Outside another, Jamie stared up at a large woman barely visible, leaning from an upstairs window, tending to freshly laundered clothes. She hung a sheet over a protruding wooden pole to dry, though it was already grimy from the sooty fog. Jamie soon realised there were many poles along the street with washing fastened and likened them to masses of flags.

#Reflections of #Thailand "Behind The #Scenes" With Fred's Diary 1981~Falling for Chiang Mai~#RPBP #TravelsInAsia #Memoir #Diary @fredsdiary1981

"BEHIND THE SCENES"

Thank you for joining us as we go behind the scenes of Fred's Diary 1981,
with the third edition of

"Behind The Scenes".

Robert Fear takes us on his journey, as he travels in Asia taking daily notes in a diary.
This authentic look into his dairy has been extended by going behind the scenes with Robert as he reveals himself to us each week with an original inside look.

"Reflections of his time in Thailand"

The Isra House on the outskirts of Chiang Mai was like
a family house with a few rooms, out in the countryside.

Falling for Chiang Mai
This is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed in. It is called Isra House and is situated on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. I was greeted like an old friend when I arrived here a week ago. It wasn’t long before I met up with Graham and a couple of days later with Sharon and Aja. They had been on a five day trek to visit local tribes (and smoke opium).

I landed in Bangkok but didn’t hang around and got an overnight bus to Chiang Mai, which is in the north of Thailand. As we neared our destination there was a spectacular sunrise over the hills and after watching that I started to relax. Arriving in the early morning it seemed very quiet and laid back, considering this is the second largest city in Thailand.

The weather is a real contrast to Hong Kong, which was often cloudy and sometimes downright cold. On getting off the plane the change in temperature was noticeable. It was dusk and 31C. Here in the north it is comparatively cool in the evenings, refreshing even, but beautiful and sunny during the days.

You can borrow bikes from the guest house and several times we have cycled into Chiang Mai to have a good look round. They have also come in handy for getting to the swimming pool at a nearby hotel, where I’ve spent several afternoons soaking up the rays and swimming a few lengths. This is starting to feel like a really enjoyable holiday.

There is no pressure on me to move on and as everything is so cheap here I plan to stay for a few weeks. There is a big water festival in the middle of April, which is reputed to be especially good in Chiang Mai. It would be great to be around for that.

The sunny atmosphere has been conducive to getting some letters and postcards written to family and friends, with a longer one to Rita, who didn’t sound too good last time I heard from her. I am still really worried about her and can’t help blaming myself.

I have let everyone know that they should send letters here for the time being. It will probably be a good two weeks before I get anything back. Letters are a lifeline when you’re travelling but it’s not always easy to know where you will be, so that people can write to you there.

So, life is good and I’m really enjoying this part of my trip. I am meeting a lot of fellow travelers and having some fun and games with them, doing some exploring, but mostly relaxing.

This afternoon I will be going on a five day trek to see the local tribes, which should be very interesting indeed. I am just heading off now to get some supplies from the local store before coming back here to finish my packing.

How did Fred, Andy & Stan get out of this mess?

The trip changes dramatically
A real shock awaited me.

The police were there making a check of the guest house.

While sitting on the verandah with an American guy, Stan, I remembered with horror that Scott had given me a small container of grass and that it was lying on my bedside table. I just hoped that Graham had managed to get rid of it somehow.

My heart fell when I was called into the room and confronted with it. I didn't have much choice about confessing that it belonged to me.

They carried out a body search, turned out my bag completely and were disappointed not to find anything else.

The next hour or so was spent filling out forms and reports for myself, Stan (small amounts of both opium and grass) and Andy, another American guy, who was visiting a friend at the house. He only had a small amount of grass on him.

We all pleaded guilty. What big offences we thought and hoped that the situation could be sorted out within a couple of hours.

They had taken our passports and we had to go with them in an open truck to the police station where we were escorted inside. We sat in an office for a while and all of us at that time were expecting to be interviewed, fined and released. However, the wheels of Thai justice don't move that fast.

We were put in the cell, which was fairly clean although the toilet stinks, at 4:30 p.m. It’s quite roomy with three different sections, all separated by metal bars. Luckily they didn't separate us and only locked the main door.

Just In Time For This Post!!!!
A New Review!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this travel diary which Fred kept as he journeyed firstly to Hong Kong then on to Thailand where he regrettably ended up in jail. After being deported he records his time in both India and Nepal. If you are looking for a travel guide this is not the book for you but it does give an insight into the reality of how it was for young western travellers over 30 years ago. Every day Fred would jot down all the details of what he did and saw or even ate. It was so interesting to see how he kept a note of exactly how much he spent on drinks and food etc I bet it’s a whole lot more expensive now! In Thailand he was charged with possessing grass and thrown into jail. This was a particularly difficult experience but even there drugs helped to while away the tedium and anxious waiting for release. In fact drugs feature prominently throughout. It’s amazing what a young body can withstand! We learn of his exploits in Nepal and in India and of the friendships and camaraderie among fellow travellers. In among the minutiae there are also some beautiful descriptions for example of leaving Kathmandu Overall he had a marvellous and life changing experience which he has written about very honestly.

An Interview With A Reviewer

Today's Review is one Of two we will be discussing this week for
"Jack And The Magical Beanstalk" by author Pablo Michaels.

Our Purpose
The purpose of these segments are to help not only authors understand a few things, but for the people who leave book reviews as well. For us to communicate with each other and help each other to understand the power of the review!

Reviews are a crucial element for any book. The more reviews you have on sales channels, the more likely it is that your book will be promoted by that sales channel. Great news right?

But what happens when someone reviews a book and the seller takes the review down? How does that affect your promotion chances? Is this yet another way for the "seller" to control the market?

What about the ratings your book is given? Is it fair to post a review below three stars? If so, should "personal attacks" be acceptable? Is a personal opinion really a qualified as a "critical" review?

These are all good questions, I think. We are going to ask the reviewer what she thinks.

Join in anytime you want, this is not a closed session. We want to help, not limit!

About The Book

In this adult fairy tale young, awkward, young Jack sells their prize cow Pearly White for magical beans to a strange man in a red bikini. Little does Jack’s mother, Lorene, know that the beans grow into a giant, magical beanstalk, high above the clouds?

Jack ascends the beanstalk to a land where a Giant Slave serves his larger Master, Jack begs Slave for food to satisfy his hunger from his long journey. But Jack finds Master hoarding treasures.

Attempting to escape the wrath of Master and Slave with the treasures, Jack encounters a handsome, engaging normal sized human man. Sam lives with others that live naturally without clothing deep in the forest. As Jack ages he becomes a handsome man, just like his father, attracting many men, including the two farmhands, Zeke and Adam.

Even though Jack has enabled the farm to prosper with the treasures he stole from Master and is met with increasing danger, he climbs the magical beanstalk again and again to find more treasures and pursue Sam.

About The Author

Pablo Michaels disguised himself as a shy, friendly heterosexual during his adolescence, fantasizing other males. Falling in love with another man his first year in college, he followed him to another university to maintain their platonic love, while he continued in his in studies. When he had his first sexual encounter with another man, just before turning twenty-one, he exploded into gay life with lust and anger. He attempted to live his new life naturally, seeking love, ignoring the statistics of the books he read on homosexuality in high school, and proving what he had read was wrong.
He wrote poetry and stories since third grade. When he turned twenty-one, he moved to San Francisco to work and write, experiencing more of gay life. In the 1980's he wrote every chance he had, trying and failing miserably at publishing mainstream fiction. He published his first story in 1986 in a literary magazine. read more...

The Review
5 Stars
The imagery is sublime
By Muffy Wilson on January 8, 2016
Format- Pre-purchase eBook

This piece really reflects Pablo Michaels’ creativity. His string of word choices is clever and wraps the scene in vivid visuals. The imagery is sublime. Who is the old man, the stranger, and what does he have to do with Jack and his mother? Pablo has cleverly added poignant character depth by infusing some of Jack’s genesis, his family, parents and farm life, even expanded upon it to describe the hardship which was the reason the cow was traded in the first place.
We have a strumming and artful gold harp—delightful—a young man running into forest. When they run into the thicket, do they meet all the other naked men? Are they slaves of the Giant? The panic and fright caused by the Giant was wonderfully underscored in his careful descriptions. I love these, ‘rumbles of thunder’, ‘like a fox on a hunt’, ‘where daylight became dimmer’. Also his use of the ‘thump, crunch’ and the cackling hen really added an element of tension and heart pounding pursuit that was so tangible.
This was a cleverly layered piece that I think was a bang on perfect tie-in for the original fairytale story. Pablo adds depth to their situation and tragedy, multiple layers of tension and understanding. I love the fairytale as a child. I love this story as an adult; just love it. It is a well-crafted, beautifully developed, very sensuous taste of adventurous youth that just kept getting better. To the hilt: delicious, decadent and delectable. I gave it a ringing endorsement of 5 stars. Buy it. At $2.99 you will not be disappointed! xo

Don't be shy...Feel free to ask any of us a question: Pablo, Muffy &  Margaret.
We are standing by and eager to discuss anything you have on your mind!
